About the Award

Marvin A. Pomerantz

Marvin A. Pomerantz (1930-2008), a self-made successful entrepreneur, left his legacy across Iowa. His dedication to education, the state, The University of Iowa, and his family were commendable. He received his bachelor's degree in commerce from the University in 1952.

In honor of Marvin Pomerantz, and his dedication to The University of Iowa and its students, the Pomerantz Career Center is introducing the Marvin A. Pomerantz Leadership Award for students graduating from the Career Leadership Academy. 

Marvin Pomerantz, well known to The University of Iowa community for his generosity to the University and UI Hospitals and Clinics, made an impact not only on a local, but a state and national level. Coming from a very modest background with eight siblings, he gave of his time by serving on countless boards, served as President of the State of Iowa Board of Regents, and spearheaded efforts to improve curriculum in the state K-12 school system.

Over the years, Mr. Pomerantz was recognized with a variety of impressive awards from organizations ranging from the Boy Scouts of America, and the Iowa Society to Prevent Blindness to being inducted into the Iowa Business Hall of Fame.



To be eligible for this award the nominee must be a current Part 2 student of the Career Leadership Academy.

Criteria: The successful recipient of this award will have displayed vision, integrity, persistence/determination, and/or philanthropy. This could be demonstrated through any of the following:

  • Encompassing a unique vision that brings out the strengths and talents of others.
  • Displaying outstanding integrity, valuing diversity, motivating and inspiring others and exemplifying proper morality in both words and actions.
  • Unwavering persistence/determination in pursuit of one’s goals and ambitions
  • Making meaningful contributions to students, the University, and/or the community by prioritizing philanthropic endeavors, service and civic engagement.
