Employer Spotlight: Principal Financial Group
The day in the life of a recruiter seems pretty simple, right? You come to work, search students on LinkedIn, do a few interviews and, voilà, the interns arrive on day one prepared and ready to go.
Yes, I suppose I do a few interviews and get to meet and greet the interns upon their arrival on day one, but the life of a recruiter is so much more exciting than that! I have the opportunity to converse with hiring leaders who are interested in hosting an intern to hear more about the skillset they’re looking for. I also get to travel to college campuses and engage with students to share more about the Principal Financial Group, Principal Global Investors, and Principal International and the internship and job opportunities we have available for them.
My favorite part of my job is meeting a variety of students who come from all walks of life and watch them secure internships that help to develop them personally and professionally to the point of being hired as a full-time employee. That’s what makes this job special. The variety of job duties keeps the life of a recruiter exciting; the fact that I could communicate with someone in China early in the morning and by the end of the day I may be hosting our CEO at an intern event that my team planned is what keeps me coming back each day.
So it’s clear that the campus recruiting consultant role is great, but why is The Principal great? There’s a one-word explanation for that—people. I get to interact with great people every day. From the sweet gentleman who greets us at the parking ramp each morning, to my recruiting team members, to the person running next to me in the lunch hour Principal Road Race Challenge 5K—another reason The Principal is a great place—the company invests in your health and well-being.
Not only do the people and wellness opportunities make The Principal a great place, we are also completing a $250 million renovation to our campus to transform into more of a collaborative and mobile work environment and upgrading our gym to accommodate the high demand it currently receives. The best part, The Principal is located in the great city of Des Moines, for those of you who haven’t had the pleasure of visiting; you should note that it was recently ranked No. 1 on the Forbes Best Cities for Young Professionals list for its vibrant and growing downtown, well-educated workforce, cost of living index, and low unemployment rate. I have had the great pleasure of working for various organizations across the U.S. and the Principal Financial Group truly is the best-of-the-best.
