careerBUZZ: 6 Networking Tips for the Good, the Great, and the Socially Awkward

Sunday, September 13, 2015 - 3:02pm

With the Fall Job & Internship Fair and Diversity Networking night right around the corner, here are a few tips to help you make important connections!

1. Prepare an “elevator pitch”

How would you tell someone important your whole life story if you had a very limited amount of time? An elevator pitch. A 30 second story about what you do and your goals and aspirations that will capture the attention of others is the way to do this. Prepare this statement and have it available in the back of your mind to pull out when you need it most.

2. Ask for an introduction

Find someone, possibly the host of the event or a friend and ask them to introduce you to their own connections. This provides an open door for you to approach the person and establish a connection with them without formally going out of your own way to pull them aside and introduce yourself.

3. Listen

You’ve heard it over and over again but listening is the easiest way to establish a connection. Listening with the intent of understanding and also establishing a connection. People appreciate those who genuinely listen to what they have to say and they WILL remember you if you do.

4. Share personal stories

Use your experiences to your advantage. Talk about them. You have unique things that you have done that no one else has done; use those to create common ground that can provide an easy foundation for furthering friendship and professional connections.

5. Practice, practice, practice

The more you practice, the easier networking will become. Practice your networking everyday, whether it be during class, at work, while walking the dog, or checking out at the grocery store. Get to know the stories behind a person and you will easily create a connection.

6. Put your practice to work
