I get it- career is a scary word, and paired with the word ‘fair’ it just seems daunting. There’s good news, though! The Pomerantz Career Center puts on fun little sessions that help you prepare for the fair. Being an avid procrastinator myself, I wasn’t sure what to expect from one of these sessions. Would they turn me into a planning, detail oriented, career minded college student? Yep, they sure did- and I couldn’t be more thankful. Read on to see the top 5 lessons I gained from one of these prepare for the fair sessions!
1. ‘What Not to Wear’
Honestly, learning the difference between business casual and business professional saved me a whole lot of embarrassment at the Career Fair. The internet can be a great place to learn, but there’s a lot of incorrect information out there regarding what to wear! Stick to info from the pros, and run your outfit by them!
2.Your Resume is Basically your Sidekick
So everyone always talks about resumes, and you should bring multiple copies with you to the fair! How else is an employer going to remember your name other than the fact that you were professionally dressed (see above lesson)?
3. Ain’t no Party Like a Career Fair Party
Literally. The IMU looks like a party of people mingling around like little bunnies. Don’t be that person! You can research the employers that will be there beforehand, and scope out the people that you want to see! Don’t waste time on what doesn’t interest you- go straight to your top 10.
4. There’s an App for That
Want to see the layout of the room? Check the app. Want get the most updated list of employers? Check the app. Need to learn how to speak with employers? Check the app. The trend here? Check the app.
5. It’s FUN!
There are tons of possibilities out there, you just need to look for them! Go to a prepare for the fair session, get all of your questions answered, and enter the fair feeling confident and excited about what lies ahead for you future!
