Imagine yourself studying for an exam by the Eiffel tower or going on a holiday getaway to Thailand. This and so much more can be your reality when you study abroad.
Studying abroad may seem like a daunting experience way out of your comfort zone. You may think that you’re missing out on all the cool things your friends may be doing, but honestly, your friends are probably wishing they could have the amazing experiences you are about to embark on. Once you take that leap of faith, you will find that studying abroad is life changing and will allow you to grow not only because you successfully navigated a foreign country, but because you were required to make new friends and create a brand new life. So let’s take a look at some aspects of studying abroad and what you can do to prepare for this journey.
First thing’s first: take time to visit the Study Abroad office located at 1111 University Capitol Center (UCC). They are a fantastic resource for any student considering study abroad. There are advisors for different regions of the world that will be able to help you navigate the process of finding the right program for you. Not only are there different advisors and different programs, there are different study abroad sessions and costs. Generally, the University of Iowa offers year-long, semester-long, summer and winter sessions. This may all seem overwhelming, but that’s what those advisors are for! Side note, if money is an issue the Study Abroad office will advise you on scholarships and grants that could potentially assist you with your ambition.
After you visit the Study Abroad office to get some general information, consider coming into the Career Center located on the third floor of the Pomerantz Career Center to see what duration fits into your graduation plan. Not only will the Career Advisor be able to assist you with that, they may also be able to recommend some resources or opportunities for you to look into while you are studying abroad to take advantage of your time there.
Now is the time to take advantage of all that the University of Iowa has to offer you. Not only do we have offices that can assist you in making sure study abroad fits into your schedule, but that you find the right program and location for your interests. Take advantage of this opportunity because who knows when you will be able to go abroad again. Think about getting a job right after college and regretting years down the road for not taking the chance to branch out and take a leap of faith.
