5 Career Leadership Academy Takeaways.....as told by 'The Office'

During my sophomore year I was searching for an elective course to go along with all my major courses but wasn’t having much luck. Finally, I stumbled across the Career Leadership Academy (CLA); which is a 2 semester academic program that helps students achieve and grow at Iowa and beyond. I walked away with a variety of improved skills, successful experiences, and a diverse network. Here are my top 5 takeaways told through the eyes of Michael Scott and the rest of Dunder Mifflin.

1. IMPROVED LEADERSHIP

This may be an obvious statement but the Career Leadership Academy approaches leadership in a unique way compared to other classes. Not only do they teach you leadership skills in the classroom, they also present you with a numerous amount of opportunities to use those skills in real-life situations. Who knows, after completing the Career Leadership Academy you may go on to be the next Michael Scott!

2. INCREASED AND DIVERSIFIED MY NETWORK

Through a number of different events and speakers the Career Leadership Academy gives their students easy access to a number of different employers, professors, and even other students. CLA hosts two large events: CLA Etiquette Dinner and LeadersLive, where students have the opportunity to interact with a large variety of people to grow their network.

.

3. COMMUNITY SERVICE INVOLVEMENT

In Phase 2 you will be given the opportunity to complete a community service project with other members of your class. This is a great opportunity to put those leadership skills to use while also helping out the Iowa City community! Get excited!

4. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Along with learning and utilizing new leadership skills, CLA also focuses on career/professional development. A large portion of the class is dedicated to your professional growth and finding a career for YOU! CLA will gives the connections and resources that help you find the dream career for you. Perhaps that dream career could be working at Dunder Mifflin…

5. IT WAS A BENEFICIAL ELECTIVE COURSE

All of us college students constantly wonder what classes to take as electives. When choosing my elective sophomore year it was a tough choice between Underwater Basket Weaving and the Career Leadership Academy until ultimately decided on CLA. I finished the academy with a variety of improved leadership and professional skills, rewarding experiences, and a constant growing network. Not going to lie, it was a pretty emotional day when I received my CLA certificate.
