careerBUZZ: Fall Semester Checklist

Welcome back Hawkeyes, and welcome to the Class of 2021! Whether you are entering your first year or last year at The University of Iowa, here are some tips to help make the most of the new school year:

Evaluate Your Priorities

The start of a new year allows us to think about what it is we truly want to accomplish. There are countless amazing opportunities at Iowa that we can devote our time to, and honestly, it can be overwhelming deciding what to really sink your teeth into. In order to create a balanced schedule, think of what it is you really want to achieve, whether it is gaining relevant experience, serving your community, or exploring career paths, and let that guide you as you navigate the semester.

Set Tangible Goals

In college, it is crucial that we as students hold ourselves accountable for what we want to achieve, and a great way to do that is to set goals! These can be short-term goals such as preparing for the career fair or joining a student organization, or a more long-term goal such as gaining professional references and establishing contacts. Either way, goals allow us to focus our efforts and be more efficient with our time (plus you feel really good when you reach them!)

Get Organized!

If you are moving into a new dorm or apartment, now is the perfect time to reorganize your room and start the year off fresh and clean. Whether you prefer an electronic calendar, paper calendar, or a series of color-coded post-it notes around your desk, establish a system that works for you, and write key dates down (Shameless plug the Career Fair is on Wednesday September 27 from 11-4 in the IMU and you DON’T want to miss it!)

Think About How The Career Center Can Help You This Year

There are TONS of resources at Career Center to assist you on your journey through professional development. Here are just a few things we do:

Thinking about switching majors or exploring career options? Schedule an appointment with a Career Advisor through MyUI.

Want your resume and cover letter looked over for your dream summer internship? Come to our walk-in hours and meet with a Career Peer Advisor.

Want a presentation for your student org on a professional development topic? Go to our website and book an engaging presentation on resumes, HireaHawk, LinkedIn, and much more.

Get ready for an exciting year!

With football, classes, and beginning of the year excitement, fall semester always seems to fly by, so be sure to make the most of it!
