careerBUZZ: 7 tips to Prepare for the FAIR!

Monday, February 19, 2018 - 12:31pm

Every student on this campus is overwhelmed with midterms, the dying bee population and that the semester ends in three months with limited time to secure an internship, full-time job or apply for graduate school. Yet, do not fear! Your fellow Peer Advisor is here to provide the hottest tips to win over the heart of employers at our upcoming Career Fair!

Tip #1: Get your resume reviewed by a Peer Advisor. Resumes can be stressful and you have enough on your plate. Whether you’re new to the resume life or want a few suggestions, stop by the third floor of the PCC, Monday and Tuesday from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. or during the fair at the PCC booth located in the IMU main commons.

Tip #2: Dress to impress! If you don’t have professional attire, hit up your roommate, the local mall or Goodwill to grab an outfit. It’s worth the investment for upcoming interviews and future professional events.

Tip #3: Do your research! There’s nothing worse than asking an employer “What does your company do?” Or, “Why should I go to your school?” A simple Google search, along with a visit to HireaHawk.com and their website will provide sufficient information. Take it one step further and learn about the industry through other credible sources.

Tip #4: Download our Career Fair Plus App (it’s free)! Downloading the app to your iPhone or Android will allow you to navigate through the 160+ booths at the fair and conduct any last-minute research. Don’t look like a confused tourist in the IMU, but a confident, young professional.

Tip #5: Practice your elevator speech! This should be roughly a 30 second – 1 minute introduction of your education, career interests and relevant experiences. Tie in skills and qualifications that were expressed in the job listing or graduate school application. Also, ask questions to demonstrate additional interest.

Tip #6: Catch ‘Em All! Yes Pokémon, but also all of the information and business cards you can get your hands on. Not only will this assist you in narrowing your decisions, you will also want to send a thank you e-mail within 24-hours highlighting interesting qualities regarding the position, employer, and/or company.

Tip #7: Take notes! Immediately after speaking to an employer, jot down anything worth noting in the thank you e-mail or in the application process.

See you at the fair Hawkeyes! Reminder it is this Wednesday February 21 from 11:00am-3:00pm in the IMU Main Lounge and Second Floor Ballroom.
