Welcome to campus, Hawkeyes! We are officially a week into the school year, which is hard to believe since it feels like classes just let out for the summer. Whether you’re a first year student who is wondering what their next few years and majors are going to look like or a senior thinking about graduation and looking for a job, we have some tips to get your school year started with your best foot forward!
Tip #1: Get Organized
It can be difficult thinking about what assignments you should do first or when your classes are. Use a planner or your mobile calendar to get organized and get a routine down for the school year! This way you can mark any important dates coming up, either for events or assignments. It may seem like a lot now, but you’ll be happy you did it in the future.
Tip #2: Visit the Career Center
The beginning of the school year can feel thrilling and overwhelming all at once. If you’re a freshman, you might be wondering how to set up your resume or apply for an on-campus job. For an upperclassman, it might be hard to know what exactly you can do with your degree in a certain major. If you set up a walk-in appointment with Peer Advisors or formal appointment with one of our Career Advisors, you’re guaranteed to be less stressed out for the rest of the year.
Tip #3: Familiarize Yourself with HireaHawk
Now that you’ve got yourself an awesome resume courtesy of your hard work and some help from your friends at the Career Center, it’s time to upload your resume on HireaHawk and fill out the rest of your profile! Our HireaHawk platform, now powered by Handshake, is an awesome way to find and apply for jobs.
Tip #4: Suit Up
Mark your calendars for the Suit Up event! The event will take place on Sunday, September 16th from 6:30pm-9:30pm at JCPenney in Coral Ridge Mall. Transportation to the mall will be available. JCPenney will offer some really great deals to our Hawkeyes on professional wear. This is the perfect opportunity to get some new clothes for that job interview you have coming up or for your job itself. Find more information about the event at: https://careers.uiowa.edu/suitup
Tip #5: Go to the Career Fair
Finally, don’t miss out on the career fair! This is coming up faster than you think, September 27th from 11:00am-4:00pm, and first year students through seniors are encouraged to attend. Over 150 employers will come to the fair looking to hire Hawkeyes! Seniors, we’re talking FULL TIME jobs!
If you follow these tips, you should be on track to having yourself a great semester!
