Information for Parents
The process of choosing a major can take time. Be patient with your student as he/she explores the options available at the University of Iowa. By researching and reflecting on majors and occupations of interest, your student will be able to make an informed decision on what is the best fit.
Find Your Focus offers students guided direction that provides a step-by-step approach to beginning their career exploration. As participants with Find Your Focus, students will:
- Meet with a Career Advisor 4-5 times throughout their participation in the program
- Complete activities and research that will allow them to reflect upon and define their academic and occupational interests
- Learn how to utilize various occupational and University resources that will aid them as they explore majors and careers
It’s also important to remember that your student’s choice of major does not define him/her and in some cases, does not limit career possibilities. Employers are interested in the entire package that a student has developed so your student’s major is just one piece of the puzzle. You can assist your student by encouraging job shadows, informational interviews, campus and community involvement, and internships. These are all ways students gather the knowledge and skills that employers are seeking.
