Career Discernment

If you had a challenging experience, reflect, reassess and learn by discussing the following questions with mentors, advisors, or career coaches at the Pomerantz Career Center.

Clearly identify what made the experience challenging:

  • Distinguish between whether it is the industry, the organization, the people you worked with, or your duties that were challenging.
  • Did you have unrealistic expectations? Was it not interesting and/or enjoyable? Poor supervision? Organizational culture mismatch?
  • What external factors made it challenging vs. what was your responsibility, attitude, or actions that contributed to the challenge?
  • How were you able to maintain your professionalism, develop skills, or increase confidence despite the challenges?
  • How can those skills and professionalism be useful in your future?
  • How will you describe the experience in a future interview in a way that highlights what you learned, how you grew, or how you overcame the challenge?
  • Do you need to re-evaluate career paths, or try again with a different employer and/or different circumstances?

Aspen has been such a great place to work and gain quality experience in the field of finance. This is my second summer at Aspen and there was no hesitation in my answer when they asked me to come back. I have not only learned so much but have also built great connections with all the brokers. Aspen is a smaller brokerage where they treat their employees and clients like family. From answering phones to opening new accounts for clients I have truly gained so much experience and have tremendously developed my interpersonal and communication skills for the better.
