BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY:The Biospecimen Procurement and Epidemiologic Resource (BioMER) is comprised of two primary units, the Tissue Procurement Core and Translational Research. A primary role of the BioMER is to obtain consent from patients to procure clinical data and biological specimens for research purposes. Our goal is to help doctors and scientists advance research in achieving earlier diagnoses and better treatments for cancer patients. Your primary function as a Translational Research Student will be to support research studies at the University of Iowa Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center. The success of these studies depends on a strong foundation built by devoted students who are committed to the advancement of cancer research. CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:· Screen clinic schedules and identify eligible subjects using UIHC electronic medical record system (EPIC) and EPIC reports.· Screen for and transfer biospecimens, such as pathology, blood, bone marrow or buccal samples.· Perform data abstraction, criteria-specific or focused chart review for on-going studies.· Enter data using data collection tools such as EPIC, Labmatrix, REDCap, and OnCore platforms.· Prepare mailings for research subject questionnaires.· Make folders and packets for patient consent approaches.· Approach patients for study consent.· Assist in judging validity of data; making recommendations for change as opportunities for improvement are identified.· Consult with supervising staff to support improvement activities and organizational initiatives.· Perform additional tasks, special functions and/or special projects as assigned. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:1. The Engineering Associate- Specialized Construction, IIHR will contribute to the research mission of IIHR – Hydroscience and Engineering by working with a team as a fabricator on the delivery of short-term moderately complex construction and project tasks. Design, construct, and repair research machinery, equipment, and apparatus (including large-scale research models).  Specific Job Duties and Tasks Gather and organize all relevant information to include interpretation of working drawings, sketches, diagrams, and blueprints required to complete the engineering work assignments. May write progress reports and technical documentation. Complete short-term engineering assignments in accordance with design specifications and standards. Participate as an engineering project team member. Complete limited scope engineering work to include all general construction methods independently as assigned. Provide leadership and direction on project tasks. Regularly works around moving mechanical parts and occasionally outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat and humidity. Noise level may be loud at times. Complete work, including equipment fabrication and installation, to meet relevant specifications, standards, and regulations.  May be involved in planning of the construction, fitting, assembling, and disassembling of machines and equipment using shop mathematics, charts, tables, and handbook formulae subject to review by a supervisor. Assist with inventory of equipment, instruments, replacement parts, and supplies. Analyze a variety of specifications, having knowledge of limits, tolerances and strengths of materials, mechanics, gearing joints, weights and volume. Understand and may apply basic engineering principles and the scientific method with regard to carpentry, plumbing, masonry, and welding. Develop materials lists, cut lists. Disaster PrepWise AmeriCorps Member

Disaster PrepWise AmeriCorps Program is looking for members to help older adults prepare for disasters.The Disaster PrepWise program (DPW) provides step-by-step guidance to create a sharable disaster management plan for individuals who may be vulnerable in disaster situations. Our program works with older adults, caregivers of older adults, and those who may need extra support during and after disasters. We also have recently translated our program into Spanish.  Member Duties: AmeriCorps members will serve with University of Iowa College of Public Health and local organizations to increase disaster preparedness among older adults in Iowa.Deliver Disaster PrepWise (DPW) intervention to specific vulnerable populations. Identify locations to reach target population (senior housing, meal sites, churches, community centers, etc.) and conduct outreach in those locations. Recruit individuals for intervention delivery. Meet with individuals to guide them through using the DPW online tool and assist with creating a personalized emergency plan. Follow up with participants to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention. Train county public health employees in intervention delivery to ensure long-term sustainability.Collaborate with local agencies ranging from public health departments to Emergency Management Agencies to develop disaster preparedness resources for their community. Research county's Hazard Vulnerability Assessment to identify disasters most likely to affect target population. Identify existing resources within the county. Plan and implement emergency preparedness events within the county/community. Revise and/or develop county emergency preparedness/response plans. Build disaster preparedness-based partnerships between county public health, area aging services, and other community organizations serving vulnerable populations.Member may participate in additional service activities that will help them grown professionally and align with approved grant activities. Position Requirements: Valid driver's license or ability to transport self from home to service site and community events. Qualifications: Must be 18 years of age or older by start date. Must have a high school diploma or equivalent or be in process of completion. Must be either a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Must pass mandatory pre-service background checks.Program Benefits:  The Disaster PrepWise AmeriCorps Program is offering several options for hours ranging from 1/4 time to 3/4 time (approximately 10-30 hours per week).  This allows students to decide what works best for their schedule. Each member will have access to trainings related to disaster response as well as several professional development opportunities, including certifications.A living allowance will be provided to help meet the necessary living expenses incurred while serving in the AmeriCorps program. The living allowance will be divided evenly across the term of service and provided every month via direct deposit. Upon successful completion of the term of service, the member will receive a Segal Education Award from the National Service Trust. Student loan deferment, forbearance or forgiveness opportunities are available depending on the type of student loan. It is the member’s responsibility to obtain information about whether their loan(s) qualify for this benefit. This is not an automatic benefit of the program.  Training and professional development related to the knowledge and skills required for service, as well as training specific to the community the member serves. The member will receive a mid-term and end of term evaluation. Program Start and End Date: September 1, 2024. Common Misconceptions Regarding Student Employment

Students who work while attending school full-time struggle to keep up with their studies because of time management issues and they have a lower GPA than students who don’t work.

Working while attending school full-time increases the need for students to manage their time and thus helps students establish a more structured routine.

  • From 2008-2021, University of Iowa freshman students who worked between 1-20 hours per week had GPA 0.25 higher than their non-working counterparts. 
  • This same data is validated with national statistics. On average, students who work on campus maintain a higher GPA than those who don’t.

Having a student job affects the focus of students away from the classroom and can cause early drop-out rates.

No campus activity has shown as much positive influence on a students’ academic success and retention as campus employment. 

On‑campus employers are aware that the students they hire have a #1 priority of doing well in school; therefore, employers are flexible with students’ schedules. 

  • From 2008‑2021, University of Iowa data shows that student employees are retained at a 4.30% higher clip than their non-working peers.

With less time to focus on academics, student workers struggle to graduate in four years and take much longer to finish their degree requirements.

Student employees don’t just keep up, but far exceed the University of Iowa graduation rate average at both the 4 and 6-year levels.

  • Since 2008, 4-year graduation rates for students who work on campus are at a 2.66% higher level than the university average.
  •  The 6-year graduation rates have an even more significant increase with student employees graduating at a 3.74% higher level.
