BioMER Research Student - Cancer Center

The Biospecimen Procurement and Epidemiologic Resource (BioMER) is comprised of two primary units, the Tissue Procurement Core and Translational Research. A primary role of the BioMER is to obtain consent from patients to procure clinical data and biological specimens for research purposes. Our goal is to help doctors and scientists advance research in achieving earlier diagnoses and better treatments for cancer patients. Your primary function as a Translational Research Student will be to support research studies at the University of Iowa Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center. The success of these studies depends on a strong foundation built by devoted students who are committed to the advancement of cancer research. CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:· Screen clinic schedules and identify eligible subjects using UIHC electronic medical record system (EPIC) and EPIC reports.· Screen for and transfer biospecimens, such as pathology, blood, bone marrow or buccal samples.· Perform data abstraction, criteria-specific or focused chart review for on-going studies.· Enter data using data collection tools such as EPIC, Labmatrix, REDCap, and OnCore platforms.· Prepare mailings for research subject questionnaires.· Make folders and packets for patient consent approaches.· Approach patients for study consent.· Assist in judging validity of data; making recommendations for change as opportunities for improvement are identified.· Consult with supervising staff to support improvement activities and organizational initiatives.· Perform additional tasks, special functions and/or special projects as assigned. Pay: $13.00/hr MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:1. High School Diploma or GED.2. Availability to work 10-20 hours between 7:30 am and 5:00 pm M-F each week during the school year. Opportunities to work up to 40 hours a week may be available during the Summer. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:1. Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.2. Student Clerk - Neurosurgery Clinic

The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Neurosurgery is seeking a part-time Student Clerk to provide general healthcare administrative/clerical duties. This position will provide a positive first impression to patients, families, and other caretakers at time of check in and triage any concerns, conflicts, or requests to available staff or recommended services.The ideal candidate will have a healthcare/medical terminology background or interest in the healthcare field and will have availability to work at least 10 hours/week, Monday-Friday.Job Duties include:Check-in & Check-out Ambulatory Clinic PatientsCall patients to discuss neurosurgery scheduled referrals.Upload documents to patients’ electronic medical recordsCreate patient referral shells via Epic (electronic health record)Fax charge sheets to billingAssist with work compensation records and faxes.Assist in incoming and outgoing calls.Producing pre-op surgical foldersOther duties as assigned.Schedule: Clinic is open Monday – Friday 8am-5pm. Exact schedule is flexible and will incorporate student availability. Common Misconceptions

Perception: Students who work while attending school full-time struggle to keep up with their studies because of time management issues and they have a lower GPA than students who don’t work.

Reality: Working while attending school full-time increases the need for students to manage their time and thus helps students establish a more structured routine.

  • From 2010-2023, University of Iowa freshman students who worked between 1-20 hours per week had GPA 0.13 higher than their non-working counterparts.
  • This same data is validated with national statistics. On average, students who work on campus maintain a higher GPA than those who don’t.

Perception: Having a student job affects the focus of students away from the classroom and can cause early drop-out rates.

Reality: No campus activity has shown as much positive influence on a students’ academic success and retention as campus employment. 

On‑campus employers are aware that the students they hire have a #1 priority of doing well in school; therefore, employers are flexible with students’ schedules. 

  • From 2010‑2023, University of Iowa data shows that student employees are retained at a 4.46% higher clip than their non-working peers.

Perception: With less time to focus on academics, student workers struggle to graduate in four years and take much longer to finish their degree requirements.

Reality: Student employees don’t just keep up, but far exceed the University of Iowa graduation rate average at both the 4 and 6-year levels.

  • Since 2010, 4-year graduation rates for students who work on campus are at a 2.93% higher level than the university average.
  • The 6-year graduation rates have an even more significant increase with student employees graduating at a 3.76% higher level.

Perception: It’s just a student job.

Reality: Student jobs develop skills future employers want. The UI STEP (Student to Employed Professional) program prepares students to articulate those skills.

Work-Study Eligibility

Each year, around 1,000 undergraduate students are employed through work-study positions. Work-Study is not a grant or a loan but a need-based, part-time employment program in which the government and the employer share the payroll cost of employing you. Work-Study gives you the upper hand of being chosen by an employer since the government directly reimburses them a percentage of your earnings.
