During Your Practicum

  • Build positive relationships with the people you will use as references and ask them for letters of recommendation. Remember to continue to talk with your contacts even after your experience has ended. A guideline for establishing and maintaining relationships with references can be found here.
  • Ask the principal at your cooperating school to observe you teach or to do a mock interview with you.
  • Attend the education job fair in the spring.
    • Note: Try to go both your junior and senior year. This way, you can introduce yourself to potential districts your junior year and meet with them again your senior year when you are searching for a job. This will give you an advantage over other candidates.
  • It is strongly encouraged that you meet with the Education Advisor at the Pomerantz Career Center by the middle of your practicum experience.
    • Note: The Pomerantz Career Center can help you with your résumé and finding relevant volunteer opportunities.
  • By the end of your practicum experience you should have a full working teaching résumé (a guide can be found here). The only part missing will be your student teaching experience, which you will add in once you have begun student teaching.

Before Student Teaching

  • Create a REAP account and/or Iowa Works account 
  • Write the first draft of a cover letter for a teaching position (a guide can be found here) and take it into the Pomerantz Career Center to have it reviewed.
  • Start looking for an appropriate and professional interview outfit.

During Student Teaching

  • Update your résumé with relevant information from your Student Teaching experience.
  • Ask the principal at your cooperating school to observe you teach and/or do a mock interview with you.
  • Secure letters of recommendation and maintain contact with your references.
  • Attend the education job fair in the spring.
  • Participate in mock interviews (offered during the fall and spring semesters) at the Pomerantz Career Center.

A great way to gain experience is by volunteering in the classroom. This can be done by simply calling a school (try to choose one that is near where you live) and letting them know how you would like to get involved. If you have a specific age or area you'd like to volunteer with more, let them know and they can get you started. It's that easy!

which the Special Education teacher provides direct and indirect Special Education support both within the General Education setting as well as within settings other than the General Education classroom.  These services may include, but are not limited to, co-teaching, co-planning, small group and individualized instruction, consultation, curricular/instructional accommodations and modifications, as well as support in regards to supplemental aids, materials and/or equipment.  Services within the Mild/Moderate program may be focused on a combination of academics (reading/writing/math) in addition to social-emotional needs of students.   Affective Needs Program: The Affective Needs program is designed to provide intensive and individualized social-emotional, behavioral, and academic support to students experiencing significant and chronic difficulties within these domains that have not improved with previous interventions and services. The program provides a smaller adult-to-student ratio within a highly structured classroom. Students participate in daily social-emotional instruction, as a primary purpose of the AN program is to help students learn and maintain the necessary self-regulation and coping skills to support their learning in the general education setting alongside their peers. As students demonstrate successful participation in the more restrictive setting of the AN classroom, they are provided opportunities for teaching/facilitating the generalization of these skills into less restrictive environments with a focus on student independence and fading reliance on adults over time.    Significant Support Needs Program: The Significant Support Needs program is designed for students with significant disabilities (which could include intense communication, intellectual, physical, and/or medical needs) who need opportunities to develop functional academic skills in addition to adaptive skills that they will need to function in everyday life such as self-care, vocational skills, money management, self-advocacy, independence, social skills, and others.  This classroom provides a highly structured environment with a low staff-to-student ratio where a variety of research-based methodologies are used to meet the needs of students.  This classroom provides students the opportunity to develop the skills necessary to successfully transition into less restrictive environments with consideration for any medical and/or developmental needs. Transition Program: The transition program is designed for students aged 18-21 who require continued support in transitioning from high school.  Transition services occur in age-appropriate community settings, including services for adult living skills, vocational supports, exploring post-secondary options, and life management with a detailed schedule to be determined by service providers and constraints of employment schedule.  Contacts: Students, parents, support staff, administrative staff, and community members. Support:Participation in an approved induction program if necessary.Participation in school-level teams and meetings.Collaborative professional development through teaming with other teachers and service providers at the school and district level.A school culture that promotes professional growth, collaboration among teachers, and student learning.QUALIFICATIONS:Active teacher or special service provider certification or license issued by the State of ColoradoEndorsement and/or specialized courses and training in the area(s) of Special Education and/or a Temporary Teacher Eligibility in the area(s) of assignment

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop a unique project based on their skills and interests that will benefit the recreation programs in BFO and NFO. Additional projects include trail and recreation site maintenance, travel management planning, and visitor contacts. The intern will have opportunities to experience what other BLM specialists do, and will be encouraged to explore other career options, provide ideas and input, and research ways to improve the recreation program.BLM Cross-TrainingThe Recreation Program Member will have the opportunity to shadow other departments in the BLM.
